MOSCOW, Sept. 28 — Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow has no plans to attack European Union or NATO member states, seeking to quell growing fears of escalation beyond Ukraine. His remarks come amid heightened military activity and diplomatic strain across Eastern Europe.
Speaking at a press briefing following a regional summit, Lavrov emphasized that Russia’s military operations are confined to what he described as “security objectives within Ukraine.” He dismissed speculation about broader aggression as “Western propaganda,” asserting that Russia remains committed to avoiding direct confrontation with NATO.
“We have no intention of attacking EU countries or NATO members,” Lavrov said. “Our strategic goals do not include expansion or provocation beyond the current conflict zone.”
The statement follows a series of missile and drone strikes on Ukrainian cities, including a massive overnight assault on Kyiv. The scale of those attacks has raised alarm across neighboring countries, prompting Poland to scramble fighter jets and temporarily close airspace near its border.
European leaders remain cautious. While some view Lavrov’s comments as a diplomatic gesture, others warn that Russia’s actions on the ground contradict its rhetoric. NATO officials reiterated their commitment to collective defense, stating that any threat to member states would trigger a unified response.
In recent weeks, Russia has intensified its military campaign in Ukraine, deploying advanced weaponry and increasing aerial bombardments. The Kremlin continues to frame its actions as defensive, while Western analysts argue that the conflict risks destabilizing the broader region.
Lavrov’s remarks are unlikely to ease tensions entirely, but they signal an attempt to manage international perceptions amid growing scrutiny. As the war in Ukraine grinds on, the possibility of spillover remains a pressing concern for Europe’s security architecture.
