Kyiv Suffers Heavy Overnight Strikes in Escalated Russian Assault

KYIV, Sept. 28 — Ukraine’s capital was rocked by a wave of overnight missile and drone attacks, described by officials as one of the most intense since the start of the war. Explosions echoed across the city as air raid sirens sent residents fleeing to shelters.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported damage at more than 20 sites, including residential buildings, a medical facility, and a kindergarten. Several people were injured, with at least five hospitalized in Kyiv alone.

Ukrainian authorities said the assault involved hundreds of drones and dozens of missiles, including hypersonic and cruise types. President Volodymyr Zelensky called for increased international pressure, warning that the scale of the attack signals a dangerous escalation.

In Zaporizhzhia, additional strikes damaged homes and a gas station, injuring at least four. Poland responded by scrambling fighter jets and temporarily closing airspace near its southeastern border.

Despite Ukraine’s air defenses intercepting many threats, the coordinated nature of the attack highlights ongoing vulnerabilities. Emergency crews continue to assess damage and assist victims.

The government has urged allies to strengthen support and reinforce sanctions, emphasizing the need for urgent action to deter further aggression.
