Abigail Zwerner, a former elementary school teacher in Newport News, Virginia, has been awarded $10 million in a landmark negligence lawsuit. In 2023, Zwerner was shot in the classroom by a six-year-old student, an incident that shocked the nation and raised urgent questions about school safety.

The lawsuit targeted school administrators who allegedly ignored multiple warnings from staff that the child might be armed. Zwerner’s legal team argued that the shooting was preventable and that the administration failed to act on credible threats.

The jury sided with Zwerner, citing gross negligence and a disregard for student and staff safety. The verdict is being hailed as a wake-up call for school districts nationwide to take proactive measures in threat assessment and crisis prevention.
