Greta Thunberg’s Humanitarian Flotilla to Gaza Reportedly Struck by Drone in Controversial Incident off Tunisian Coast

A humanitarian flotilla carrying climate activist Greta Thunberg and over 350 international volunteers was reportedly struck by a drone while navigating international waters near Tunisia. The vessel, part of a broader campaign to deliver aid to Gaza and challenge Israel’s longstanding naval blockade, was en route from Sicily when the explosion occurred.

Eyewitnesses aboard the ship described a sudden blast that rocked the vessel, followed by confusion and panic among passengers. Initial reports from activist groups claimed the explosion was caused by a drone strike, though Tunisian authorities have denied any involvement. According to a statement from Tunisia’s Ministry of Defense, the incident was likely caused by an onboard malfunction or internal detonation, not an external attack.

The flotilla, organized by a coalition of European NGOs and peace activists, was carrying medical supplies, food, and water intended for civilians in Gaza. Greta Thunberg, who joined the mission to highlight the intersection of climate justice and human rights, was unharmed in the incident. Her presence has drawn global attention to the mission, amplifying both support and criticism.

Italian opposition leaders have condemned the attack, calling it “a shameful act against peaceful humanitarian efforts.” Several members of parliament are urging the Italian government to issue a formal statement and investigate the circumstances surrounding the explosion. Meanwhile, international observers are demanding transparency and accountability, warning that such incidents could escalate tensions in an already volatile region.

The flotilla has since docked in Malta for safety inspections and to reassess its route. Organizers remain committed to their mission, stating that “no act of aggression will deter our resolve to deliver aid and stand in solidarity with the people of Gaza.”
