How Much Did Pope Francis and the Cardinals Earn?

With the death of Pope Francis, the world has lost one of the most beloved and humble spiritual figures of recent times.

Even in managing the material aspects of his life, Pope Francis consistently set an example of simplicity and humility.

Let’s take a look at how much the Pope earned and what the cardinals’ salaries were during his time.

Pope Francis: No Salary

During his pontificate, Pope Francis did not receive a salary. From the moment he assumed the papacy in 2013, he chose to renounce any form of personal income.

He lived in the Casa Santa Marta, a modest residence inside Vatican City, and all his needs — food, lodging, medical care — were entirely covered by the Holy See.

His intentions were clear: to live humbly, close to ordinary people, without accumulating wealth or honors.

The Cardinals’ Salaries

Cardinals residing in Vatican City or serving in the Roman Curia received a monthly salary.

The amounts varied depending on their roles and years of service, but generally ranged between €4,000 and €5,000 net per month.

In addition to their salaries, cardinals also enjoyed free food, lodging, and healthcare provided by the Vatican.

During his papacy, Pope Francis also implemented salary cuts (such as a 10% reduction for cardinals in 2021) to help manage Vatican finances during the pandemic.

A Lasting Example

Pope Francis left behind not just words, but concrete actions: the renunciation of privileges, a simple lifestyle, and attention to the poor.

His approach to money and material goods stood as a model of Gospel coherence, and today it continues to inspire millions of faithful around the world.
