The First British Officer Killed in World War One

The first British officer killed in  World War I was  Lieutenant John Neville Keynes, who was serving in the Royal Army Medical  Corps (RAMC). He was tragically killed on August 13, 1914, during the early stage of war .

However, it's important to note that the first British officer to die in action in the context of military engagements, rather than in a non-combat-related situation, is generally considered to be Lieutenant Thomas Meux.

He was a British Army officer in the Royal Field Artillery and was killed on August 23, 1914, during the Battle of Mons, the first major battle between British and German forces in the war. This makes Meux the first British officer to die in combat during World War I.

His death was symbolic of the many British officers who lost their lives in the opening months of the war, as Britain entered into what would become one of the most devastating global conflicts in history.
