UN Endorses Two-State Roadmap as Gaza Crisis Deepens

The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly approved a new resolution aimed at reviving the two-state solution between Israel and Palestine. Known as the New York Declaration, the plan outlines a phased approach to ending hostilities and establishing a sovereign Palestinian state alongside Israel. Despite broad international support, the Israeli government has rejected the proposal, intensifying tensions in the region.

The Resolution

Backed by 142 member states, the resolution calls for:

  • A demilitarized Palestinian state within pre-1967 borders

  • International peacekeeping forces to stabilize Gaza

  • A transitional authority to replace Hamas and oversee reconstruction

  • Recognition of East Jerusalem as the capital of Palestine

The resolution also urges both sides to cease hostilities and begin negotiations under UN supervision.

Israel’s Response

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu dismissed the resolution, stating that “there will be no Palestinian state under current conditions.” His administration has accelerated settlement expansion in the West Bank and authorized new military operations in Gaza, citing national security concerns.

Israeli airstrikes have recently targeted UN-run shelters and medical facilities, drawing condemnation from humanitarian organizations.

Humanitarian Crisis

Since October 2023, over 64,000 Palestinians have been killed, with millions displaced. Gaza’s infrastructure is in ruins, and access to food, water, and medical care remains critically limited. Aid convoys face frequent delays due to border closures and security restrictions.

The UN has called the situation “a humanitarian catastrophe,” urging immediate international intervention.

Regional Reactions

Qatar, Jordan, and Egypt have condemned Israel’s actions and pledged support for the UN resolution. Gulf states are preparing for an emergency summit to coordinate diplomatic and humanitarian efforts.

Meanwhile, the United States has expressed “conditional support” for the roadmap, while maintaining its strategic alliance with Israel.

The UN’s endorsement of a two-state solution marks a pivotal moment in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. Whether it leads to lasting peace or deepens the divide will depend on the willingness of both sides—and the global community—to prioritize diplomacy over destruction.
