TORONTO — In a sobering development for Canadian journalism, Corus Entertainment has confirmed significant layoffs across its Global News division, affecting 46 employees, including 26 journalists. The cuts span multiple provinces, with the majority concentrated in Alberta and British Columbia, and one additional role impacted in Eastern Canada.
The layoffs are part of a broader efficiency review aimed at reshaping the company’s operations for long-term sustainability. Corus cited economic pressures, declining advertising revenue, and the need to adopt new technologies and workflows as key drivers behind the decision.
“These changes are difficult but necessary,” a company spokesperson stated. “We are committed to building a more sustainable future for our News division while continuing to serve our audiences with trusted journalism.”
This marks the latest in a series of restructuring efforts by Corus, which previously consolidated newsroom resources in Calgary, Edmonton, and Lethbridge. The company has also paused new productions at its children’s content studio and reorganized its audio division in recent years.
Industry analysts warn that the layoffs could further erode local news coverage, particularly in underserved regions. The move comes amid a broader trend of media downsizing across North America, driven by shifting consumer habits, digital competition, and economic uncertainty.
